Christmas at Sea Shipping Label
The Seamen's Church Institute (SCI) is a nonprofit, social service organization serving men and women in the maritime industry.
Our Christmas at Sea charity knitting program has been going strong since 1898. Annually we distribute approximately 20,000 handmade knit and crocheted garments, in ditty bags, to Seafarers calling on the Port of New York and New Jersey as well as Mariners working inland U.S. waterways. To date Christmas at Sea can boast over 1,000 individual volunteers and another 150 groups across the United States and beyond.
Knitters and crocheters are asked to follow our patterns (or capture the essence of our patterns) which were designed with mariner safety in mind. Our patterns complement the safety gear worn on vessels.
